Seven Ways to Avoid Plant Poisoning
- Become familiar with the dangerous plants in your garden and home – known them by sight.
- Do not eat wild plants, unless you are sure about their safety.
- Keep plants, seeds and fruits away from children; make children aware of the potential danger of poisonous, plants; teach them not to put plants, plant parts berries or mushrooms in their mouth.
- Choose safe plants for decoration of your home.
- Avoid smoke from burning plants.
- Do not make homemade medicines from collected wild plant or cultivated plants.
- As leaves of houseplants die and fall off, pick them up and dispose them.
Emergency Management for Plant Related Poisoning
- Exposure to the mouth: Remove any plant parts from the victim’s mouth. Give a small amount of water.
- Exposure to the skin: Wash skin exposed to the plant with cold water immediately. Remove any clothing that had been in contact with the plant.
- Exposure to the eyes: Rinse eyes with warm water for 15 minutes.
- Go to your Doctor or a healthcare facility right away; don’t wait for symptoms to develop.
